Using Google Webmaster Tools to Help Make Your Small Business Better

When it comes to giving your small business an upgrade, you need to develop an Internet presence. Even if you're part of a small, localised community, you have to see how important the Internet can be to your small business. Nowadays, people are less likely to walk into a store without knowing something about it first. In the old days, you would have to explore and see for yourself first-hand. Now, people use the Internet to learn even about the small businesses in their own community. This is why your web page can be so powerful for your small business. If you have a small business that sells all over the country or world from your website, then you know how important the Internet can be. In this article, you will learn about using Google webmaster tools to help make your small business better.

If you're unfamiliar with what Google webmaster tools do, basically they allow the webmaster of your site to see how Google views your site. In other words, your webmaster can see how your site is indexed, how many hits and visits it gets, and what kind of search strings bring your site up. Using the webmaster tools, you can get a view of your website that can certainly help to optimize performance. You can see which marketing techniques have been working and which techniques probably need to be reconsidered.

Using Google webmaster tools, you can upgrade your business's website in a meaningful way. Instead of adding new graphics, videos, or content for the sake of an upgrade, you can actually make informed decisions. This may be a matter of knowing which links bring viewers to your site, or it may also be a matter of finding out where your viewers are coming from. In today's world, you could have potential customers virtually anywhere. They could be right next-door, or they could be in another country on the other side of the world. You have to figure out where they are and what you can do to turn them into loyal customers.

The best way to look at Google webmaster tools is to see it as an accessory in your search for the perfect website. It's a tool, just as the product advertises itself. Keep in mind that it is a free tool, and that you can use it when you'd like. Watch how your business grows and use webmaster tools to steer it in the right direction.

Why You Should Register Your Site With Google Webmaster Tools

I've have more websites than the average person: 15 at the last count. It seems that whenever I have a new idea for internet marketing, I create a new website. You'd think that means I'm making tons of money, but unfortunately that hasn't happened yet.

When I first started doing this, I would diligently register my website with Google Webmaster Tools. This is a free tool that Google has. It shows you stats such as the last time your website was crawled and if there are any crawl errors (this is important to know).

But then I started getting lazy. This step got omitted more and more. I decided it didn't really matter.

But now I've changed my mind and I think it's important.

The main reason for this change of heart came about when I created one particular new website. Google crawled my site pretty quickly and my home page was indexed within days.

But weeks went by without the other content pages showing up. When I typed in site: and my site in Google, it showed that only the home page, privacy policy, and contact us pages were there.

I patiently waited for Google to find the rest of my pages. I had a site map, both for the visitor and an xml version for bots. But after a few more weeks-nothing.

So finally I registered the site with the Google webmaster tool. And I discovered something very interesting.

Google was, in fact, crawling my site on a regular basis. But my site was generating crawl errors!

The crawl errors page of the tool led me to discover a problem in my htaccess file. It turns out I was accidentally hiding all of my pages from the Google bot except for the home page, privacy, and contact us.

I had copied the htaccess from another site that needed the code in it. But for my new website, it had an adverse effect.

So after that experience, I'll always register my website with the webmaster tool.

Now I'm not sure that registering the site map makes a difference as far as getting indexed goes.

On another new website, I noticed only one page on one of my new websites got indexed. So I made sure I registered the site map with the webmaster tool, hoping that would help Google find the rest of my pages.

But a few days later, it didn't seem to make a difference. The additional pages still were not indexed.

Regardless, the tool is still very valuable. For instance, you can find out when Google last crawled your site, how many pages are indexed, and if there are any crawl errors.

It also tells you some basic analytics information such as which are the top keywords that were used to find your site, and also a list of external sites that link to yours.

As far as which pages are indexed, that's an area that the tool is lacking, in my opinion. It tells you how many pages are indexed, but not which ones.

But overall, the webmaster tool gives you some very helpful analytics. More importantly, it alerts you quickly to crawl errors that may be preventing your site from being indexed.

Louis Banalty has quite a few websites that are registered with Google's webmaster tool. He also has a website with wood pellets for sale and information on pellet stove pellets.

How To Conquer Google

Think about it, with Google's ever-changing algorithms; how can you feel secure about the ranking of your website? It may be looking good in its SERPs (search engine results pages) today, but how about after the next algorithm update. Can you really expect that your site to have that same position or better? Many website owners and their webmasters are finding Google and its page ranking procedures to be quite confusing. They are finding unexplained and unexpected changes in the positioning of their websites in the Google search engine database. Some owners are finding their once high-ranking site much lower in the the Google SERP's after one of search engine's periodic algorithm updates. This usually means a big reduction in the website's revenues which means lower sales and possible failure of their business.

Google holds the fortunes of most websites in its hand, and with its constant algorithm updates who can be sure of their website's search engine results? The smart businessman would be wise to look beyond Google as his sole means of business promotion. For if he or she fails in this area; they will most certainly have a business casualty. All business people should be researching other means of marketing to insure a successful business endeavor online.

That being said, Google is not the only way of gaining exposure for your website. You can implement strategies that will lessen the ability of the Google giant to control your internet venture. These techniques do require effort, but you can master them with patience and determination. Here are some of the most effective ways to get visitors and potential customers to your website:

1. Forums - forums are a great way to acquire targeted traffic to your web presence. Forum participants are people with interests similar to yours. In a forum you will be able to engage in discussions on subjects related to your business. You can network with individuals knowledgeable about the field you are in. These people can and will provide helpful information on topics of interest to you. You can also share your knowledge with the group. Some may become customers or mentors; overall, you are sure to make contacts and get visits to your site. To get visitors, remember, you need to include your website's URL in your signature(your name or I.D. with your company's URL included) when you post a comment.

2. Email - put your signature on all of you email correspondence. This is a nice way to promote your site in a very sutle and effective manner. The recipient will almost always take notice of your included web address and go to those emails if ever desiring to contact your site. The email will serve as an unnoticable marketing tool.

3. Online classified ad sites - place classified ads with various online classified ad sites. Sites like Craigslist.com can be used to generate traffic to your website by presenting products and services you have to thousands of potential customers. Be sure to look into these, for some of them are totally free.

4. Reciprocal linking - get backlinks from other sites in your field. Find sites that provide similar products and services to yours, but it's best to make sure these products and services don't directly compete with what you provide. That may not always be possible but always try to do it that way. Less competition is always good. If this can't be done, just remember, a link from a site in your category will most certainly be of value to your website. You could receive visitors from your link on their site. So, be willing to cross-promote with other websites, it usually turns out as a benefit to your site and vice-versa.

5. Social community sites - this is one of the single most effective new developments on the internet landscape. These sites are sprouting up all over the world-wide web. New and interesting communities are being created constantly, with people gathering to share their thoughts on a variety of topics, from animal care to WAHM(work at home). Joining these groups you a sure to find many like-minded people who will become your internet friends. You can receive helpful advice, and entertaining conversation on these social sites. Myspace, Mybloglog, Mylot, Facebook and others, are getting lots of visitors and are growing larger day by day. Get in and get connected.

6. Bookmarking sites - sites like Digg.com, Stumbleupon.com and Reddit.com can send you literally thousands of visitors. There are webmasters who specialize in producing information and articles to submit to these sites in an effort to promote their websites. An enticing piece of information on one of these sites will cause a stream of prying eyes to your website. Some of the visitors will continue to visit your site which can mean a constant improvement in your site's readership. Register with them and see an increase in your site's popularity.

Now, as you can see - there are ways to get around Google. It can be done, but you are going to have to work to make it happen. Google is a very valuable giant to have on your side, and we all know that. But letting this giant control the total well-being of your website can be foolhardy. As I've said above: Google updates its methods of calculating search engine rankings constantly. You are; therefore, at its mercy regarding your website's visibility - you maybe sitting high in the SERPs today - but what about tomorrow? Do the things suggested above to insure a more controllable website marketing future for your business. Use the information and enjoy the rewards!

How to Use Google Adwords For Online Marketing

Google AdWords is the world's most popular PPC advertising model. Google AdWords customers

usually bid far less per click on the content network than they bid for Google Searcher

clicks, since the perception is that clicks from content pages are worth less than clicks

from the Google Search page. Google AdWords software, services & ebooks to help you

maximize your return-on-investment by maximizing the click through ratio, and minimizing

the cost-per-click of your Google AdWords ads. AdWords is Google's flagship advertising

product and main source of revenue.

Advertising

Advertising costs are only accrued when users click on your adverts. Even if you already appear in Google's search results, AdWords can help you target new audiences on Google and our advertising network. AdWords offers pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, and site-targeted advertising for both text and banner ads. This has allowed organizations that otherwise would not have the advertising skills to reach a global, online audience. Through testing and measuring, you should be able find the sweet

spot where you are most effectively reaching your advertising goals.

Campaigns

Site targeting campaigns are mainly designed for branding purposes, as the ROI will almost

always be considerably lower than a traditional content-targeted campaign. Also, remember

to use basic common sense when setting up your campaigns -How would someone search for your

product or service. Google Adwords is always making changes that can negatively affect

their campaigns, actually they are DESTROYING campaigns.

Budget

Advertise your business on Google No matter what your budget, you can display your ads on

Google and our advertising network. You can, for instance, set a daily budget of five

dollars and a maximum cost of ten cents for each click on your ad. An account requires a

$5 minimum deposit, and you set your own daily budget. You can control your budget and you

only pay for clicks.

With Google AdWords you can reach people when they are actively looking for your products

and services. If your goal is to build visibility on search engines quickly, then Google

AdWords is an essential option to explore. It is worthwhile for anyone to open a Google

AdWords account and experiment with how paid listings may help drive traffic to a site, or

use the service as a keyword research tool.

Is My Website Automatically Indexed on Google?

So you've finally got your website up, its all designed and you're waiting for the Google crawler to come along. Its now two weeks later and your site isn't indexed? You ask yourself is my website automatically indexed in Google?

There are several ways to help get your site indexed in Google.

The first option is to firstly use a 'pinging' service. What this does is to let the search engines know that your site exist and to visit it next time it goes crawling (although this can never be guaranteed).

Another option is to create an XML sitemap. If you do not know how to do this, there are many free tools online to help you create one. A sitemap file is usually stored in the root folder of your homepage and can be named whatever you like, however most people just leave it as sitemap.xml. The next step for a sitemap file is to submit it using a Google Webmaster Tools. You will also be able to monitor if your pages have been crawled and indexed.

Social bookmarking is another way to get your site crawled and indexed quickly. The most popular sites are updated every few minutes with fresh content and search engine spiders absolutely love them so it is definitely worth bookmarking your pages.

Article directories such as Ezine Articles similarly to the point mentioned above are crawled every few minutes as it has very good credibility and authority. It is always worth submitting as many quality articles as you possibly can with a link back to your site to try and get it automatically indexed.

RSS feeds are an additional feature you can implement. If you do not know how to do this, then just like a XML sitemap, there are plenty of tools to help you do this, IceRocket have a great RSS builder which is free. Once you create an inventory of your pages, you can submit this to several directories.

If after all the above methods have been implemented, you may want to look at your robots.txt file as this may be blocking the spiders from crawling your site or you may have other issues. Rest assured, there are many people that claim that they can get a site indexed in hours, however it can take weeks so one needs to be patient.

So in essence, if you have a brand new website that has no backlinks, no sitemap and nobody knows about your site, then it will be very unlikely that your site will automatically be indexed in Google. The best way is to get backlinks so these links can be followed and then eventually to your site. Most of the methods above try to cover this point. Good luck.

How to Use Google AdWords Effectively - Without Losing Money!

Are you frustrated when you use AdWords? Are you losing money every time you try? Then stop wasting your time and money. You have just found the solution to your problem. This article will explain how to make money using Google AdWords.

Google AdWords is a system which allows you to drive targeted traffic to a website. The costs of AdWords are calculated on a pay-per-click (PPC) system. You simply bid on your adverts against other advertisers.

But why is it so easy to lose money on AdWords?

Many people dive straight into an advertising campaign without first thoroughly researching their keywords, and crucially, their competitors.

Be Specific

If you're selling facial exfoliation products on your website you need to make sure your keywords are related.  Settings up ad AdWords campaign using keywords such as "beauty treatments", or "facial treatments" are too vague and will not target your niche audience.

Your niche audience is: people looking specifically for facial exfoliation. I know what you're thinking; facial exfoliation is a body treatment. You're quite right, it is. But having just typed into Google "body treatments" there are thousands upon thousands of websites, products, guides and recommendations with anything from body wraps to aromatherapy massages.

Out of the entire body treatments market your niche of facial exfoliation is very specific and of a much smaller group of people. Why pay for thousands of people to click on your advert, when maybe only 10% of those people are actually interested in your specific products?

Set a budget

AdWords has a very clever feature which allows you to set a daily budget. Now, you may have $100 to spend on advertising, but don't blow this all in one day, the market changes daily due to many influences. If your budget is $100 try setting a daily budget of $3.60. That way your campaign will last for a month (28 days).

Another way to keep costs low is to look at how much your cost-per-click is. Research your keywords and your competitors. A keyword of body treatments may well cost $1-5 per click, whereas a specific keyword of "facial exfoliation" may only cost $0.20. With a daily budget of $3.60 you could get 18 clicks per day, that's 500 clicks in a single month!

My blog: SimonBell.biz features many online money making techniques. I have many articles and guides that explain the best and most effective methods of making an extra income online. If you can optimise your AdWords campaign then your income will rapidly expand!

My First Website - Using Google Services

Every webmaster is using at least one of many Google services. This is because Google is the most important web search engine and like it or nor you can not do anything on the web without taking Google into account. Google search engine is popular because it returns highly relevant search results. It is not so easy to select relevant pages among millions of websites where spam is present on every step. Consequently this also means that it is not so easy to create pages that will appear on the top of search results. This is a very important fact for internet marketers which depend on traffic. And one of the most important sources of free traffic is Google search engine.

Google provides many services, most of them are free. It is up to you which of them you will use, however, some of them are almost indispensable.

Google web search

This is the basic service that you can use to search for anything, to make money or just to have fun. Using Google is not an option, it is a must. There is simply no alternative. Yahoo and Bing try to compete with Google but they are still light years away.

Google Webmasters Tools

This service shows what Google search engine knows about your websites. Here you can add sitemaps, check for broken urls, page loading times, used keywords, links and much more. To use this tool you need to verify ownership of the website you would like to check and then you can see how it performs in the eyes of crawlers and search engine.

Google Analytics

This tool is used to monitor visitors, their properties, source and other stuff related to the performance of the website. Here you can also monitor the number of daily visitors, where they come from, how long they stay on the page, what they are searching for, etc.

Google AdSense

This service can be used to make money with any website. You simply put few lines of code on the page, This code will show Google ads and whenever somebody clicks on them you will be paid. Usually you will get few cents for each click but in some cases you may get even few dollars for one single slick.

Google AdWords

With this service you can advertise your website. You can choose to display ads with search results or on user pages where the ads will appear as AdSense ads. Of course, this service is not free. You have to pay when users click on your ads. It can be anything from few cents to few ten dollars in highly competing market niches.

For example, the Free quark website uses many Google services. Here you can find everything about domains, free hosting, commercial hosting and many useful webmaster advices.

Local Marketing Using Google Adwords

In my last article, I went over some basic information about what pay-per-click advertising is and what it can do for you. In this article I will start to go into some specifics on how to increase your you traffic with quality people that are in your target audience.

Effective keywords are the secret to effective pay-per-click advertising. At the risk of a really bad pun, good keywords are the key to your success. A good keyword tool can help you make correct decisions about what keywords to choose. If you are reading this article, then like me you are looking for a free solution to this. One such program is Good Keywords. This piece of software will allow you to, among other things, enter a keyword or key phrase(a series of keywords) and the software will find out how many times they have been searched in the last month, and what other keywords are being searched for in the same category.

In other publications about using Google Adwords you can find out how to get to the tops of some lists by targeting a lesser used keyword. I am going to show you how to get to the top of the list and target only those people you are interested in. This will save you a lot of money, and will increase your CTR(Click Through Rate) and conversion rate drastically if implemented correctly.

Lets say your company makes custom office furniture in Pittsburgh, PA. You use your Good Keywords tool and find that the key phrase office furniture was searched around 179,157 time last month through Overture. You can multiply this number by about 8 for Google. You find that the key phrase custom office furniture was only searched around 712 times. By targeting your specific geographic region you can take advantage the key phrase office funiture without the fear of pumping a lot of money into competing with thousands of companies.

By going back to Good Keywords and entering the key phrase office furniture Pittsburgh we can find out that it was searched 88 times last month. That seems like a small number having looked at the 179,157 there was for office furniture, but these 88 are alot less competitive a market and they are your specific audience.

In the next article I will show you how to take the key phrase we selected and start a Google Adwords campaign to target it. Later in this series we will also focus on how to target geographic specific publications. We will also be going over the specifics of the Adwords interface and how to use it to manage your campaigns.

How to Make a Website - Useful Tools

When developing a website there is a lot to consider even if you are experienced and already understand a lot of the requirements and concepts involved. It makes it easier if you know what tools are available to help you out. Based on this I have compiled a list of the tools I find most useful when developing a site and thought I would share it with you.

Browser Extensions

Firebug and the Firefox developer toolbar

These are two different extensions for Firefox which allow you to both inspect the data and scripts that make a website page up. Firebug is actually my favourite but you may wish to check out the Developer toolbar as well. Do a search on google for 'firebug' or 'firefox developer toolbar'.

Developer toolbar for Internet Explorer

There is also now a developer toolbar for Internet Explorer 7 and IE 8 actually comes with the toolbar pre-installed.

These tools allow you to do things such as: inspect CSS styles sheets and Javascripts used in the page, see the individual CSS or Javascript events attached to individual HTML elements in the page, view header data, post and response data. Believe me, whether you are a web designer or web developer, learning how these tools work will give you a big advantage when developing and bug-fixing your websites. I absolutely cannot do without them on a day-to-day basis.

SEO for Firefox

There is a great little tool if you want to understand SEO. Search Google for 'SEO for Firefox' and you will find seobook.com which offers 2 tools for SEO - a toolbar and also an inpage set of SEO results.

SEOMOZ keyword extractor

This tool scans a web page and reports back the keywords and terms which are most prominent on that page. Basically, you tell it where your website is, then it tells you which terms your site seems to be trying to rank highly in search engines for. If the results aren't the keywords you've been targeting, you'll probably want to make some changes.

Browsershots

Browsershots is a great service for web designers that lets you see how your website looks in different types and versions of web browser. It can take a while to produce the results, but it has a comprehensive list of browsers and you can't argue with the price - its free.

Wave

It's good practice to adhere to to accessibility guidelines, and means people with disabilities will find your website easier to use. Wave is a tool to evaluate how accessible your site is - it will show you what you're doing right, and where you can improve.

W3C link checker

It's easy to get links right when you first add them to your website. But as your site grows, pages change. The same happens to external sites too, so links which once worked often end up at a 'page not found' error. This link checker scans every link on your web pages, telling you which ones work, which ones don't - and exactly what's wrong with them.

Site Monitoring with

Site24×7 - this free online service pings your site hourly and graphs response times and warns you if the site goes off line. For a few dollars a month, you can get checks every 5m and SMS alerts.

Wordpress

Wordpress is probably 1 of the greatest tools to be introduced to the web in the last few years. It was originally intended as a blogging tool but now - with the great range of Theme templates, widgets and plugins you can create a fully fledged website without having to write any code yourself. You dont have to create blog posts but can just create a site which has pages. Plugins such as SEO for Wordpress even help optimize your content for SEO without you having to understand this too heavily.

Google Tools

Google Webmaster Tools

How to Make Google AdWords Bidding Features Work to Your Advantage

Perhaps one of the most useful online marketing tools that every webmaster should try to get familiar with is using the different features of Google AdWords to their advantage. One very useful feature of Google AdWords is its bidding system - a feature where online marketers are given the chance to bid on the keywords that they are marketing for.

But then again, just like any other online marketing strategy you need to know a few essentials about how the Google AdWords bidding system works in order to utilize it effectively. AdWords bidding will only provide impressive results if you know what you're doing.

Is your AdWords bidding strategy targeted on the right keywords? If your bidding decisions are not based on actual data from your website, there is a huge chance that you're bidding strategies are not as effective.

In order to be able to bid on the right keywords that will help improve your online visibility, you need to focus on actual search queries - the exact words or phrases that people type in search engines to find websites in your niche. Focusing on your potential customers will let you choose the best keywords to bid on, which is why it is important that you monitor and regularly check which terms are best to bid on.

Search engine marketing experts suggest that you base your bids on real keywords from your log files which are also based on actual traffic and conversions instead of basing your bidding decisions on historically popular keywords with unreliable volume estimates. By doing that, you are assured that the AdWords keywords you are betting on are targeted directly to your customer's search engine queries.

Part of being an online marketer is to understand how your customers behave, think, and use the internet. By understanding the way our customers behave, you will be able to bid accordingly leading to higher conversion rates, lower cost per click and lower minimum bids, a higher quality score, better search engine rankings as well as bringing more qualified traffic to your website.

Keyword search tools such as the Google AdWords Keyword Tool is an effective place to start building your keyword list and learning the basics of Google AdWords in the process. However, while these keyword search tools are effective, the secret still relies on stepping in the shoes of your audience and find out how they got to the websites they are visiting and what things they are searching for.

Always remember that the secret to effective Google AdWords bidding is allowing the searcher's queries to influence the keywords you are bidding on instead of hoping that the keywords you're bidding on will shape your customer's behavior.

What if you can't get more website traffic? Here's a "secret snowball traffic system" that has generated over 1,175,000 visitors for my tiny websites. Click Here Now to get this free video that will show you how to make it happen for your sites. http://www.jasonnyback.com/ezine

Tools That Every Website Owner Should Be Using Right Now

Google not only has the most popular search engine, but they also have dozens of really useful and completely free utilities. If you are responsible for the success of a website, then there are two Google tools that you should absolutely be using right now.

Google Analytics

The first tool, Google Analytics, lets you get valuable information about the web traffic coming to your web site. Create a new Google account, if you do not already have one. After that, login to Google Analytics and click the Add Website Profile link. You can monitor multiple web sites at once, but you must be able to paste code into the web pages in order to prove ownership. This prevents you from being able to access site statistics for web sites that do not belong to you (such as your competitors).

You will need to paste the code Google Analytics provides into all of your web pages. The code should be pasted at the top of the document, within the tag. After adding a new web site profile, you will need to wait at least one day before you can start viewing data. Once the data is available and your tracking code has been confirmed, you should see a green checkmark next to the web site profile name.

When you click the web site profile name, you will be brought to the Dashboard page. This gives you a quick overview of your web site. You can drill down into each of the sections on the Dashboard page. Go through each one and examine the data. The more you look at this stuff, the more it is going to make sense to you. Do not be overwhelmed by what you see. After looking at this a few times, it will start making more sense.

You are most interested in the number of unique visitors. Your goal, of course, is to see this number steadily rise. If you do something that you think will increase traffic to your site, wait for a few days and then look at Google Analytics to confirm that there was an actual increase. If there was not, then you may need to change your strategy.

Google Web Master Tools

As with Google Analytics, Google's Web Master Tools will require you to verify site ownership. You do this by either pasting a Meta tag that Google provides in your main web page or by uploading an HTML file that they provide.

Once you paste the code in your index.html page or upload the HTML page they provide, you can click Verify. Once the site is verified, you will be brought to the Dashboard page. Now you can see what top search queries brought visitors to your site. This can help you identify whether you are using the right keywords.

You will also see whether there were any crawl errors. Crawl errors can occur when the search engine is attempting to read through your web site and index the content. These errors can cause you to lose valuable web traffic, so you want to make sure you immediately resolve any issues that Google identifies.

The data displayed in the Web Master Tools reflects data collected the last time your web site was crawled. Google does not crawl your web site every day, so it is possible that the data on the dashboard will not perfectly match the data you see in Google Analytics.

To quickly determine whether your site is being indexed, type "site: yourdomainname" into a Google search box. For example, to find out if theweb site is indexed, I need to enter "site:site name" into a search box. If you do this and get back no results, then you know your site has never been indexed.

As long as your web site does not violate any of Google's rules or use deceptive practices, it will be crawled in time. However, if you can't wait or you have recently made major changes to your site, you can submit a sitemap.

You do this through the Web Master Tools by expanding Site Configuration and clicking Sitemaps. The sitemap is a text-based file that contains Extended Markup Language (XML) tags. Do not worry if you know nothing about XML. You don't have to.

There are plenty of tools available, both free and for sale, which will build this file for you. I have had success using the trial version of Inspyder Sitemap Creator 2.0 and this will work fine if you have a small website (less than 25 pages). Once installed, you can generate a sitemap in a few minutes by simply typing in the name of your web site and clicking Go.

You can choose to exclude certain files and then generate your sitemap by clicking Create Sitemap. Alternatively, you can click Create and Upload and this will upload the sitemap directly to your web site. However, before you can do this, you will need to specify the FTP settings (username, password, URL, and remote folder name) for your web server. Once the sitemap file has been uploaded to the web server, you can use the Web Master Tools to submit the sitemap.

There is a very good reason Google's main page only contains a search box and two buttons; a page like this loads very fast. This has been one of the key factors in Google's success. If you expand the Labs link in Web Master Tools and click Site performance, you will see a page which indicates how well your site is performing. It is important that you check this and make sure your pages are not rendering slowly. This can affect your Google page ranking negatively.

It is a good idea to set aside one hour a week to reviewing the data provided with Analytics and the Web Master Tools. The easiest thing to do is just make it a Sunday night or Monday morning ritual. If you are consistent with monitoring your web site and making adjustments accordingly, your site will grow.

How to Use Google AdWords to Move Prospects Along the Sales Process

Did you know that 80% of the people who inquire about a product or service usually end up buying from a different company than the one they initially went to first? This fact is important because it says something about how people buy, and that they usually go through a sales process first before buying anything.

And this is no different online. You have to move your buyer through a cycle before expecting to close them on a sale. Even those buyers who buy impulsively go through a cycle of some sort - you just don't see it. All you see is that they came from nowhere to purchasing your product.

So when advertising on Google AdWords, you have to do the same thing. You have to move your buyer through a process in order to maximize the probability of them buying your product.

Let's take a look at 4 steps of the Google AdWords sales process below and see how you can integrate them into your AdWords campaign.

STEP 1: Know the objective of your campaign

So what do you want your prospects to do? Do you want them to buy now, or do you want them to signup for your free offer? Even before they clicked on your ad they were involved in a decision making buying process, so when they reach your ad, do you want them to buy - or learn more?

This step is important because not all buyers are the same. And they aren't the same because you and other businesses in your niche have trained your buyers to behave a certain way when it comes to buying the products in your niche. This is where market research comes into play and before you make your prospect do anything, you should already know their buying behavior in relation to the kind of products that you sell.

STEP 2: Selecting keywords

If this isn't the most crucial step then I don't know what is. When creating your AdWords campaign, the kind of keywords that you pick can make or break a sale. At this step, you have to put yourself into the shoes of your buyers and think about the keywords they would use to find your listing.

The majority of the keywords you select at this step will be broad - since most buyers typically aren't looking for you, they're looking for a solution to their problem. So almost any relevant person or business will do. But you want to turn their "any relevant person or business" into YOU being the person that can solve their wants and needs.

But you should know that the more broad keywords you select, the more hits you will get from people not looking to buy anything. Not only are these people not looking to buy anything, more than likely they're not looking to buy anything anytime soon.

What you want to go for here in this step of the process is laser targeted keywords that serious people are typing in. There won't be alot of these keywords, but they will almost always convert better and cost less than broad keywords.

STEP #3: Have a good ad

I could probably go on and on about this mistake but I won't. You should already know the importance of having a good ad that intices people to click and visit your website. Without a good ad, you won't get much clicks, and Google may even penalize you too for not having a relevant ad.

Without a high performing ad, you will have an ad that gets a lot of impressions and not a lot of clicks. With this combination, you will get a low click-through rate. If you have a very low click-through rate, your AdWords ad will be place to the bottom of the list of similar ad - simply because it has been proven to not perform as well as others. So if you want to see immediate effect in your bottom line, improve your ad. It's well worth it.

STEP 4: Make your landing page good

When users click on your ad, they should reach a page that describes exactly what you stated. Depending on how you run your business, this page should be very informative and related to what they're searching about - no matter if you use a "pre-sell page", a "squeeze page", or lead them to your product page.

A good landing page also plays a part in your overall quality score within your AdWords account, so you should take having a good landing page more seriously also. It's fine to test multiple landing pages also, but you want one that is most profitable for you, and that ranks well in terms of what Google considers to be a good ad.

Be sure to implement these 4 steps when creating or modifying your AdWords campaign.

They work based on the core and fundamental principles of the search engine.

Unlike savvy webmasters, lazy webmasters are always chasing the holes of the search engine. They implement different techniques to cheat the search engine. Evidence suggest that, Google is using LSI in its algorithm to provide its searchers with relevant and useful information, identify poor content websites, identify duplicate content and examine link profile.

Let's see how Google uses latent semantic indexing:

9 Free Webmaster Tools You Can Fall In Love With

Webmasters and developers don't need a whole lot of money to spend on tools in order to work efficiently and be productive. Here is a list of free tools that help me run my everyday webmaster chores.

Notepad++

Dreamweaver and such designing tools might have become very advanced in the recent years but I am still far from satisfied with them. I prefer to do the coding with a simple text editor and be in total control of the code and not end up with unnecessarily long code. Recently I discovered Notepad++ which has the few bells and whistles that are desired by hard core programmers such as code highlighting, Regular Expression Search/Replace support, capability to extend functionality with plugins and nice depository of contributed ones. Worth your attention.

Filezilla

If you are like me and don't use WYSIWYG editors to do your HTML/CSS designs then you are probably need or are already using a standalone FTP client to upload/download files to and from your server. Filezilla is a free tool that I have been using for some time and has not failed me. New version 3 has lots of new features, if you are FTPing stuff often maybe you should check it out.

Xampp

XAMPP is an apache server distribution that integrates php, mysql, phpmyadmin and a bunch of other great open source projects into an easy installation. It can be used on production servers to host one's sites but I mostly use it locally to code and test my html/css/php projects. Its easier to develop locally because there is no need to upload files on servers everytime, and only upload when your project is complete. It can be installed on Windows/Linux and lots of other platforms and if you are serious about developing you should get it installed in your computer and start playing with it.

Google Analytics

Google analytics is a free website statistics package that anyone can easily integrate into their website in a few minutes. Analytics once installed on your website it gathers data and presents you with reports about which sites your visitors come from, what country they live in, how long they stayed on your site, which pages were more popular and a whole lot of reports that you will likely not need another statistics package for you site. Those statistics are vital to the progress of any site in order to understand a site's audience and find things that might need to be improved. You can create as many analytics accounts as you like (unlimited number of sites) as long as your total pageviews don't exceed the monthly allowance of 5 million.

Firefox

Mozilla Firefox is not only a great browser to surf with. Firefox was build with extensibility in mind and has given developers a way to extent its functionality with add-ons. Add-ons can enhance the capabilities of Firefox and enhance the browsing experience. There is a whole lot of add-ons in the Mozilla repository that can help you with task such as bookmarking, searching, social interaction, developing, news reading, downloading to name just a few categories. Some of the following favorite tools of mine are actually Mozilla Add-ons. Its definitely worth your attention.

SeoQuake

Seoquake is a Mozilla add-on that was created with the SEO professionals in mind. It will help you gather important statistics about a website or web page with the touch of a button. Such statistics include PageRank, indexed pages, Google backlinks, Cached date etc. One can also extend it/configure it to gather other important statistics from online services not already included in it.

Firebug

Firebug is yet another Mozilla Add-on; a webmaster tool that can help you understand and debug your javascripts. It has so many bells and whistles that I am thinking of devoting a whole article on it. I will just mention the features that I use myself; Inspecting and editing HTML and CSS on the fly, debugging and running javascript on the fly, monitor network activity but there are many others. Here is a video tutorial I recently found that will help you get started with firebug debugging

Gimp

Gimp is an open source image manipulation package that can help you with photo retouching, image composition, format conversion and animations among other things. Its not likely to replace adobe photoshop any time soon but its a free alternative that has found many followers and through its plugin architecture promises to built the only image manipulation tool you will ever need. Some of its features are presented in a way of a presentation but nothing can convince you better than to actually install it and try it on your own.

The Google Suite of Webmaster Tools

When I first started promoting websites almost nine years ago (2001), there was a lot more guesswork that had to be done by webmasters to figure out what Google expected for a website to rank favorably in search results. Google has evolved over the years, continually increasing interaction with its webmaster audience and giving progressively clearer instructions on how to rank well for targeted search terms. Google has also become more open in seeking feedback from the webmaster community and its search audience in general. In addition increasing the dialog between Google and its users, Google has created a suite of products that are very useful for accomplishing tasks that cover the full spectrum of website promotion, including getting your site indexed by Google, tracking traffic to your site from all sources, promoting products, and optimizing your content to achieve higher traffic and higher conversions.

Setting up a Google Account
To access the Google tools, you'll need to set up a Google Account. There are a few different ways to set up an account with Google, including signing up directly to access any of Google's webmaster tools described below. To set up a general Google account, all you need is an email address. Although you could manage your access to the various Google tools using different accounts, it makes sense to keep everything together under one account.

If you don't have any form of an existing account (such as Gmail, Picasa, iGoogle) with Google, you can go to their Accounts page and set one up. You simply enter your email address and a password to get started. After you've submitted your account information to Google, they will send you a verification email with a link that you need to follow to verify that you own the email address you used to set up the account.

Google Analytics
Google Analytics allows webmasters to monitor traffic patterns on their websites. Setting up your website with Analytics is normally very simple. You sign up for an Analytics account, insert a tracking code into your website header, and watch the stats start rolling in.

Google Webmasters
Google Webmasters serves a few purposes. It is a community for webmasters to learn what Google expects from their websites in order for them to receive high search rankings. It's also a way for webmasters and Google to communicate regarding their relationship. Webmasters can submit sitemaps to Google to help with indexing their sites. They can also configure settings to give Google recommendations on how to index their sites. Google provides through their Webmasters tool helpful information regarding links it recognizes pointing to a webmasters website. The Webmasters tool also provides information about keyword searches for which the webmaster's site ranks highly and clickthrough stats related to those high ranking keyword terms.

Google Sitemaps
Google Sitemaps provides a way for webmasters to help Google index their sites correctly. You may have noticed when doing searches on Google that there are some results that show up on the results page, but when you click on the link to visit the site, the page doesn't have the same information as was presented in the search results. Sometimes the page is gone altogether. Why does this happen? Because Google has the ominous task of trying to index billions of web pages, keeping their contents as fresh as possible. Obviously they're not perfect. They need help from website owners.
Sitemaps is Google's way of asking for help indexing your site, which in turn helps your site. In the control panel for Sitemaps, Google suggests that submitting a map of your website will "...tell Google about pages on your site we might not otherwise discover." Sitemaps has been integrated with the Webmasters setup, so you can submit your site's map by logging in to your Webmasters account.

Google Base
Google Base is a handy tool for websites that sell products. Webmasters can create product feeds representing what they have available in their online store, and submit those feeds to Google Base. Google displays the products to people who use its product search module, and oftentimes products listed in Google Base are included with regular web searches. Using Google Base is just one more way store owners can get their products in front of potential customers.

Google Website Optimizer
Google Website Optimizer is an analytical tool that webmasters can use to determine the best way of presenting content to their visitors. Using Website Optimizer, a webmaster can run experiments to see which version of a page is more successful at accomplishing a goal such as generating a lead , a sale, or some other action.

Conclusion
Google's tools have made it increasingly easier for website owners and webmasters to understand what is required of their websites in order to achieve success along the most dominant search engine. Understanding and using these tools will certainly benefit your SEO and overall website promotion goals.

A Beginner's Guide To Google's Webmaster Tools

If you are in the process of creating a website or have just discovered the Google Webmaster Tools then it would be best if you know to set it up and to be able to use it effectively

Webmaster tools are not only offered by Google but are also available from other major search engines, such as the Yahoo! 'Site Explorer' and Microsoft's 'Bing Webmaster Tools'. As commented by Google:

"Google's Webmaster Tools help webmasters better control how Google interacts with their websites and get useful information from Google about their site."

Allowing any webmaster to identify any current issues or problems that may exist with site performance, including how the site itself performs within Google's search engine results pages (SERPs). Not forgetting to help improve the crawling and indexing of your site by using the webmaster tools.

To begin it is required that you sign up for the webmaster tools and then add your website, if you already have an existing Google account you can access all of these tools already. It will then be required to verify that you own the site and the easiest way to achieve this can be to upload a html file to your server or to link your Google Analytic s account with your webmaster tools.

Once logged in you can add a website URL to the webmaster tools by clicking on the 'Add a Site' button from the Home page. Enter your website address and then click 'Continue'. Once selected you will be asked to choose a verification method. Using the previously mentioned methods you can upload a HTML file to the server by downloading the 'HTML Verification File' as instructed and place it into the root file of your server. Or to simply select the option to 'Link your Google Analytic s Account'.

If you already have a Google Analytic s account and already have imported the data through to the Google webmaster tools this can help create a much richer data pool. If not simply select the 'Manage' option that is along from the website previously uploaded and then choose 'Google Analytic Profile' this will then allow you to choose the correct Google Analytic account that you want to import the data from.

If you have managed all of the above and all the data fields have began to populate this will be an essential tool that will help any webmaster in the beginning to help master the search engine optimisation techniques that will now be important to focus on now that you are properly being indexed by Google.

The information at your disposal will be very valuable to any webmaster in trying to calculate how their website is currently performing within the SERP's. This can be further enhanced by submitting a site map. This will help Google determine what pages exist within your website so each page can be indexed, if this is not included then not all pages may be displayed therefore affecting your search traffic. This can be carried out by submitting a site-map that is in a XML format not exceeding 10megs.

The initial information at your disposal will be the top search queries that turned your site as one of it's results, while showing your Google search rank for each of those searches. Not forgetting that it also displays all links to your website, keywords, internal links, crawl errors, site performance and much more. It should be very straightforward once set up, with much of the information be familiar to Google Analytics.

How to Use Google Sitemaps to Market Your Business

A sitemap is like an index of your website. It is written in XML, a form of markup language for the internet that allows you to exchange documents on the internet.

It isn't necessary that you know this in order to use sitemaps. What is important is that you create one, add it to your site, and then use it to get your site indexed by the search engines, especially Google.

Once you have built your website and added all of the content to it, your next step is to build your sitemap. Google offers plenty of tools you may use in its Webmaster tools section. If you are using a content management system, like Wordpress, you may want to check first and see if there is a script that will generate the sitemap for you. This will save you a lot of time.

If you don't have any type of scripts available, then you will need to find a sitemap building tool. There are three types of tools: scripts you may add to your site, software, or online tools you may use. What you choose to use will depend on your level of expertise, as well as your budget. Some tools are free, and others you will have to pay to use them.

If you want to use online tools, then do a search in your favorite search engine for "free sitemap generator". You may also visit the Webmaster Tools section at Google for a list of scripts and software they recommend.

Download your tools and create your sitemap. Once you have created your sitemap then you need to upload it to your website. Make sure you put it in the main directory of the website you have created the sitemap for. (You will need to know the path to this file when you submit to Google. It will look something like this: http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml, and make sure you name it sitemap.xml.)

If you don't have a Google account, you will need to sign up for one. It's free. Sign up and then log into the Google Webmaster Tools section. When you first log in, you will see the dashboard. It will ask you to add a site. Type in the URL to your website, like this: yourdomain.com.

The next step is to verify your site. There are two ways to do this: a verification file or a meta tag in the header of your index file. Either upload your verification document or add the tag to your index and then reload the index.

Once you have completed this part, click on the link in the sidebar that says "Sitemap". This is where you will add the link to your sitemap. This is very important. Although Google will begin to index your site, they won't index your site through your sitemap, which is faster. The reason is that they won't know your sitemap exists.

Finally, check for errors. Google offers an extensive collection of tools to help you analyze your site and check for problems. If you get any errors, read the documentation Google will offer you to help you solve the problem.
